7 common questions

01What is PathwayCounselor?

PathwayCounselor is a free AI virtual school counselor for high school students. It helps with course selection, graduation requirement tracking, building a college list, finding scholarships, Common App and supplemental essays, application deadlines, and FAFSA questions. It works for any US high school student, and adds district-specific policy answers for Frisco ISD and Prosper ISD students in Texas.

02Is Pathway Counselor the same as the counseling and therapy practices with similar names?

No. Pathway Counselor — written as one word, PathwayCounselor — is an academic and college planning app for high school students at pathwaycounselor.org. It has no connection to Pathways Counseling, Pathways Professional Counseling, or any other mental health, therapy, or licensed counseling practice that shares part of the name. A student who needs mental health support should contact their school counselor, a licensed provider, or in a crisis call or text 988 in the United States.

03Is PathwayCounselor free?

Yes. The free plan includes the AI counselor chat, college list and deadline tracking, and the essay workspace with essay grading. Pathway Pro adds a higher monthly allowance and live web search for current admissions information.

04Can PathwayCounselor answer questions about my school district?

For Frisco ISD and Prosper ISD, yes. Those districts' course catalogs, graduation plans, GPA and class rank rules, and handbook policies are loaded, and the counselor answers from those documents rather than from memory. For every other district, PathwayCounselor gives general US high school and college admissions guidance and tells students to confirm school-specific policy with their own counselor.

05Who is PathwayCounselor for?

High school students in grades 9 through 12 planning for college, and their parents. It is most useful for students without easy access to a school counselor, since the average US public high school counselor is responsible for hundreds of students at once.

06Does PathwayCounselor write essays for students?

No. It reviews drafts, explains what a prompt is actually asking, and gives specific feedback on structure and detail, but students write their own essays. Colleges require the essay to be the applicant's own work.

07Is student data private?

Yes. Profile answers, essay drafts, and counselor conversations are encrypted at rest with a key derived per student, so one student's data cannot be read with another's key. Every database table uses row-level security so students only ever see their own records.
